In last eight months, I have often found myself contemplating on what it means to add quality in education. What are the gaps beyond classroom learning that people are facing as challenges to access the kind of education they need and deserve? ‘Quality Education’ is subjective in nature and there may not be a uniform definition. But i-Saksham gave me some perspective through various conversations with students and educators.
A while ago, I got a chance to participate in an event called Baal Utsav (Children’s Festival) organized by i-Saksham. It is a platform for students to show their talent by engaging with other students and an opportunity for edu-leaders to exhibit 21stcentury skills like creativity, leadership, flexibility and social skills that they have developed in their journey. To prepare for the event, all the team members first brainstorm on the activities and flow. This year, we decided to include role plays by children emphasizing on the significance of education, art and crafts to freely express their thoughts, rhymes, tech based games using Math Duel and Bolo App and other fun activities. All the team members including edu-leaders actively engage with each other and also invite other important stakeholders like teachers, students and parents to be a part of the day. All the children either from community learning centers or not, are free to participate. There is absolutely no barrier. For many, it is one-of-its-kind-experience.

“हमे हमेशा से नाटक करने का शौक था पर कभी ऐसा मौका नहीं मिला. आज पहली बार भाग लेके दोस्तों के साथ नाटक करके बहुत अच्छा लगा. आगे भी करेंगे. जब सुजीत सर बोले थे बाल उत्सव में नाटक करना है तभी से हम सब बड़े उत्साहित थे.” — Sudhir, a student of Sujeet, an edu-leader
Sudhir has always been fond of acting, dancing and singing. Baal Utsav gave him that opportunity. While listening carefully to Sudhir, it occurred to me how co-curricular activities including sports and cultural performances have been crucial in my development. Until now, I was more focused on students’ literacy and ability to work with numbers. I was not looking beyond the subjects — English, Math, Science, Hindi, Social Science and Environmental Science. Prima facie, the idea of having opportunities to access 21st century skills in rural areas may sound utopian for the challenges it brings along. I was looking for answers to mainly these two questions:
- Where there is lack of trained teachers, how can one possibly think of having a platform for children to explore learning outside classrooms?
- Who will take the responsibility of getting the desired levels of learning to children?
Here, emerging edu-leaders at i-Saksham play a vital role. One of them is Paramjeet, an enthusiastic passionate guy taking conscious steps to bring change in his community. At Baal Utsav, I got to interact with him about how he got associated with i-Saksham and how it has helped him.
हम i-saksham के साथ पहली बार जुड़े थे जब गांव में तीन महीने का प्रशिक्षण होता था| हम लोगों को कंप्यूटर, इंग्लिश और टीचिंग की ट्रेनिंग मिलती थी| हमको हमेशा से कंप्यूटर सीखने का मन था पर बाहर कहीं नहीं जा सकते थे, और जमुई में भी आर्थिक स्तिथि के कारण सीखना मुश्किल था| इस प्रशिक्षण के द्वारा सर लोग से काफी कुछ सीखे कंप्यूटर में| तब लगा कि i-saksham फेलोशिप में भी सीखने के और मौके मिलेंगे तो हमने जोइन कर ली| बच्चों को पढ़ाने के नए-नए तरीके सीखे, खुद का भी learning हुआ| हर बार कुछ नया सीखने को मिला, बच्चों को टेक के साथ सिखाए| Watch: How children are learning Math concepts using a tablet
Paramjeet continues to use technology to teach children. He is strongly driven to serve society, develop himself and become a better educator for his community. Despite the roadblocks and times when he felt like giving up because students’ parents would not pay the fees on time, he chose to continue. He strongly believes that financial security is important in the long run to be able to work for the society. His dreams of a life where he can take care of his family as well as contribute towards social welfare. I asked him, “आपके हिसाब से एक अच्छे बाल उत्सव में क्या-क्या होना चाहिए? उसके लिए आप क्या कर सकते हो?”, to which he gave the following four points:
1. Learning from your past experiences
एक अच्छे बाल उत्सव में बच्चे उत्साहित होंगे, उनकी कला बाहर आएगी और सभी को भाग लेने का मौका मिलेगा| पिछले साल हम लोगों को बाल उत्सव की समझ थोड़ी कम थी| इस बार सोच के रखे थे कि समझेंगे और अच्छा कैसे करें| इस बार थोड़ी बेहतर जानकारी होने के कारण अच्छे से हुआ| पहले ही तयारी कर लिए थे, खुद का और i-saksham का परिचय दिए, सभी अभिवाभकों को निवेदन किए कि आना है क्योंकि सिर्फ बच्चों के बोलने से वे नहीं आते| उनको कहा आपका बच्चा भी भाग लेगा|
2. Being aware of one’s surroundings and willingness to go out of the way
हम गांव के जितने युवा लोग हैं, दोस्त हैं, सबको बोले कि वो बाल उत्सव में आएं| हमको ऐसा लगता है कि गांव में किसी भी बदलाव के लिए उत्सव में युवाओं का होना बहुत ज़रूरी है| हम अपने केंद्र पर भी लीडर के रूप में बच्चा लोग के साथ थे जब वो शिक्षा पे नाटक का तयारी कर रहे थे| फिर जब नाटक हो गया तो डर लग रहा था फिर भी माइक पर कहानी के बारे में बोले|
3. Outgrowing inhibitions and being confident
हम लोग शिक्षक और प्रिंसिपल से मिले| परमिशन मिलने में बहुत मुश्किल हो रहा था लेकिन उनसे विनती किए की स्कूल के फील्ड में उत्सव करने दे| प्रिंसिपल कहे कि सारे सामान की ज़िम्मेदारी लेनी होगी, कुछ भी सामान नहीं टूटना चाहिए| हम पूरी ज़िम्मेदारी लिए कि कुछ नहीं होगा, कोई कुछ नहीं करेगा, सब बस देखने और भाग लेने आएंगे| (Baal Utsav is organized at a government school of the village by edu-leaders. 4. Making everyone a part of the process and giving a chance to lead
हम शिक्षकों से बोले आप भी भाग लें| दो शिक्षक आए और भाग भी लिए| हम जब बड़े लड़के लोग को देखे तो सब को कुछ-कुछ काम करने दिए जिससे उनको भी अच्छा लगे कि हम कुछ लीड कर रहे हैं| किसी को स्टोरी में भेजे, किसी को आर्ट में और सबको गाइड किए| हमारे पास भी काम था तो हम हर जगह नहीं रह सकते थे| किसी एक को कहे घूम-घूम के देखने कि सब ठीक से हो रहा है|
Paramjeet is now a part of our team. He is driven to improve the quality of education in his village and strongly feels that to bring change, participation of parents, youth, children and teachers is inevitable. He believes in getting them all together, saying, “बच्चों को जागरूक करें तो अभिभावक भी हो जाएंगे| अगर 30 बच्चों को बोलें कि वो अपने 2–3 दोस्तों से बात करें तो सोचिए 90 लोगों तक पहुँच सकते हैं| ऐसे ही आस पास के स्कूल के टीचर, युवाओं को साथ जोड़े तो शिक्षा के प्रति बेहतर जागरूकता हो सकती है|” There was a big smile and a sparkle in his eyes while sharing his Baal Utsav experience. I was both inspired and awestruck to learn how this 21-year old in his first year of graduation is emerging as a change maker.
He was the happiest and proud while saying, “मज़ा तो हमको तब आया जब टीचर बच्चों को देख के बोला इतने बच्चों को संभाल पाओगे और हम दावे के साथ बोले कि कोई तोड़ फोड़ नहीं होगी, हम देख लेंगे| प्रिंसिपल जैसे देखते हैं हमको बड़ा अच्छा महसूस होता है| बहुत इज्ज़त से बात करते हैं| अब सब देख के पहचानते हैं और कभी स्कूल जाते हैं तो अच्छा लगता हैं|”
