The Internet, Lost Connections and Loneliness

Listening to Enrique’s classic old songs, I think of simpler times — the years around 2010. This was when I was almost done with my pre-university studies. Finishing class 12th and pursuing higher studies.

I don’t remember who introduced me to Enrique. I remember how much I enjoyed Escape, Addicted, Hero, and a few more. It’s funny how some songs become time machines. They take you back — not to one moment, but to a whole phase of life.

These days, I often think about when technology hadn’t taken over our lives the way it has now.

Back then, we didn’t plan our holidays around “no network” zones. We weren’t trying to escape the internet. It simply wasn’t always there.

We didn’t hold our pee to finish watching Instagram reels or YouTube shorts. We didn’t carry our phones to the washroom like they were extensions of our hands.

Perhaps most of us would sit, maybe try hard to poop, wander around a bit in thought, or engage in a conversation in our heads. Strange comfort in that solitude.

I’m talking about the times when messaging someone — “hello”, “missing you”, “wasssssup”— was just that. Simple. We wouldn’t battle with ourselves before reaching out to someone we cared about.
